The company was founded in 1987 by John Concialdi (J.C.) and Bob Sullivan with the main office located in Compton, California. It was a tuning shop of servicing vintage vehicles and the latest racing modified import cars. The company had some important advantages in the automotive industry such as massive creativity, passion to make things go faster, and technical engine knowledge.
In 1993 the shop relocated to Gardena, California. The company's reputation had grown and the shop should work 24 hours a day in order to have vehicles ready for the next event or street race. Since then, AEM logo was seen almost on every racing car. The company became well-known when vehicles tuned by the AEM shop won in various competitions.
AEM was one of the first who developed Packaged Air Induction Systems. They made dyno testing to understand what is the essence of the intake energy dynamic and how the air flow through the engine. Honda, Nissan, and TRD have the opportunity to experience this air induction systems. The Packaged Air Induction kits were exposed for sale in 1994. It was a do-it-yourself upgrade for CRX and Honda. People could buy vehicles at an affordable prices and equip them with this devise to increase horsepower and torque. Nowadays, the company still is the leader in the automotive industry and numbers hundreds of air induction devices.
AEM company was one of the first who engineered and designed aftermarket induction systems with specific diameters and tube lengths to take advantage of pressure waves in the inlet tract. The AEM engineers also made the first Cold Air Intake. Together with K&N, AEM designed conical air filters to enhance air flow into the inlet duct.
